Lot no. 95
[DAUMIER (Honoré)]. PHILIPPON (Charles). La Caricature politique, morale, religieuse, littéraire et scénique. Paris, Aubert, 1830-1833.
3 volumes in-4, comprising issues 1 of 4 November 1830 to 128 of 18 April 1833, illustrated with numerous lithographs in black and in colour, notably by Daumier, Grandville, Monnier, Raffet, Traviès, Devéria, Lami, Gavarni, Pigal, Charlet. The lithographs are numbered from 1 to 268, some are unnumbered en bis or ter, and some are double-page or fold-out lithographs bearing a double number.
Set of first volumes of the most important satirical journal of the 19th century. Famous for its many attacks on King Louis Philippe, including the famous pear-shaped caricature, La Caricature revealed the talent of two masters of the discipline, Honoré Daumier and Jean-Jacques Grandville. The newspaper disappeared in 1835, largely because of the many lawsuits brought by the authorities.
Bound in red half-maroquin with corners, spine richly decorated with 5 bands, signed Thivet.
(some foxing and spotting, rare wear in the margins, last lithograph in volume 3 detached).
