The works in this series are composed of two binary elements: a frame containing the residue of burnt charcoal and a second frame containing a canvas printed with the burnt charcoal. In groups of two, three or four frames, these 'paintings' are placed together in a positive and negative relationship, rather like photography or engraving. The charcoal-making process is slow and steady, requiring a gradual increase and decrease in heat so that the wood is not turned to ash, but retains the potential to burn again; the burnt paintings thus consider the cyclical, almost alchemical transfer of energy in nature, a phenomenon fundamental to Balula's work.
