L., engraved by L. M. Petit. Paris, Martinet, L. M. Petit, 1809. Large in-8, fawn half calf, smooth spine decorated, red title page, smooth edges (Binding of the period). Extremely rare suite of 30 plates of Italian costumes engraved by Louis-Marie Petit after drawings by François Debret and Hippolyte Lebas and delicately coloured at the time. The prints, captioned and numbered from 1 to 30, are preceded by a letterpress title. The binder has inserted a blank sheet between each print. This album was long attributed to Jean-Baptiste Debret (1768-1848), the author of the famous Voyage pittoresque et historique au Brésil, before recently being reattributed to his younger brother, François Debret (1777-1850), a renowned architect who travelled in Italy with his friend Hippolyte Lebas from 1806 onwards. One of only two known copies of this collection, along with the one in the BnF (Estampes, OB-42-4), which does not have the typographical title and in which the proofs are before the letter and numbering: the title, numbers and captions have been added by hand. Our copy is thus the only one complete with printed title and captions. Colas only knows of the BnF copy, which he cites under its manuscript title: Costumes italiens dessinés à Rome en 1807 par Debret. Two spines split, one headband worn, a few stains in the margins of the engravings.
