DEFOE (Daniel). Adventures of Robinson Crusoe. New translation. Paris, H. Fournier, 1840. Large in-8, green half-maroquin with corners, spine decorated, untrimmed, cover (V. Champs). First edition of one of Grandville's best books, illustrated with a frontispiece on chine volant, interpreted by Brévière after Grandville and Français, 40 out-of-text figures and 165 vignettes, bandeaux, culs-de-lampe and lettrines, all wood-engraved after drawings by Jean-Jacques Grandville. A very fine copy with the hors texte illustrations in double state, on vellum and on chine, and the frontispiece in triple proof. "The woodcut illustrations were printed on chine in a small number, and the copies containing them are sought-after" (Carteret). The volume, untrimmed, has been washed, glued and elegantly bound by Victor Champs. From the André Sciama library, with bookplate. Discrete repairs to the cover and margin of the frontispiece.
