Lot no. 21
DELVAUX (Paul) Veurne (Furnes), 10 November 1984.£. Letter signed to Paul Van den Abbeel. 1 page in-4 (27.4 x 21.5 cm) on Paul Delvaux's letterhead with envelope, ink on paper. In this letter, Paul Delvaux states that his friend, the Belgian painter Émile Salkin, is well represented in his painting The Spitzner Museum. He then remarks that he has no knowledge of Salkin's relationship with Igor Stravinsky and advises him to "contact his brother-in-law Pierre Angelroth". The picture, painted in 1943, is one of Delvaux's most important works. Pierre Spitzner's museum of medical curiosities had a major influence on the painter's work: his specimens and skeletons frequently reappeared on his canvases. In fact, Delvaux learned to paint skeletons under the patronage of Salkin, who accompanied him to the Brussels Museum of Natural Sciences for drawing sessions. Some foxing to the cover. Provenance : The Romantic Agony sale, 21 & 22 November 2014.
