Paris, Mortain, [1716]. 2 parts in one folio volume, spotted brown calf, spine decorated, spotted edges (contemporary binding). Superb work published on the initiative of the painter and print merchant Gilles de Mortain, presenting the state of completion of the château and gardens of Versailles at the end of the reign of Louis XIV. It contains a total of 54 plates, including 24 doubles, based on drawings by Menant, Girard, Delamonce, Martin, Le Pautre and Blondel, engraved by Menant, Raymond, Scotin, L'Ainé, Lucas, Fonbonne, de Rochefort, Hérisset, Baquoy and Daigremont. This copy opens with the title leaf and the privilege leaf of the first part. It then contains the second part of the work, entitled Les Plans, Coupes, Profils et Elévations de la Chapelle du Chasteau Royal de Versailles, consisting of a suite of 10 numbered plates plus 3 unnumbered plates (2 plates Trophées de la Chapelle du Château Royal de Versailles and 1 plate Vue et perspective de la Chappelle du Château Royal de Versailles). This is followed by the 38 numbered plates of the first part, interspersed with 3 unnumbered plates (View and perspective of the lower part of the Orangery of the Château de Versailles, View of the Chateau Royal de Trianon in the park of Versailles, and View of the machine at Marly). From the Robert Eden library, with heraldic bookplate bearing the motto Si sit prudentia. Plates 20 and 35 trimmed short with minor damage to legends and engravings. Binding worn, rubbed, worn and missing leather, uncovered headpieces and nerves.
