Lot no. 102
[VERLAINE (Paul) Paris, Ambroise Vollard, 1911 [1910]... Wisdom. In-4 (28.5 × 22.2 cm), leaves, in publisher's printed filled cover and flap folder. Edition decorated with 82 figures by Maurice Denis, wood-engraved in black and in colour by Jacques Beltrand. The future Nabi discovered Sagesse in 1889 and drew these compositions, which were intended for publication. However, the project remained on the drawing board until Ambroise Vollard revived it in 1910. The drawings were then reworked, coloured and engraved by Jacques Beltrand. Limited edition of 250 numbered copies, this one of 210 on Hollande "Van Gelder" laid paper produced specially for the book with its title watermarked (no. 168). "Verlaine's cunning is certainly not to be found in the painter's note. On the other hand, the poet's naïveté, feigned or real, his need for love, his repentance, and above all his inner humility find a not inconsiderable correspondence in these silhouettes of widows, orphans, abandoned women, young women at prayer. A few landscapes add to the poetry of the volume" (Chapon). Dirty, stitched cover, a few tears to the flaps and one corner damaged. Cover slightly spotted and soiled. Marginal foxing and spotting not affecting the text or engravings. Localized staining, affecting the upper left corner of about ten leaves. Bibliography: Carteret, Illustrés, IV, p. 395. Chapon, Le peintre et le livre, p. 68-72 and 280.
