Lot no. 16
DENYS THE PERIEGETE. Opus de situ orbis cum commentariis Eustathii Thessalonices archiepiscopi. Abele Matthæo jurisconsulto interprete. Paris, Poncet Le Preux, 1556. 2 parts in one volume in-4, limp vellum (old binding). Very rare single edition of Abel Matthieu's translation into Latin verse, accompanied by the extensive commentary by Eustathius of Thessalonica, also translated into Latin. The title of the volume bears the fine engraved mark of Poncet Le Preux. Denys the Periegete's important treatise on ancient geography was written in Greek during the reign of Emperor Hadrian (AD 117-138). This long didactic poem had already been translated into Latin by Avienus in the fourth century and by Priscian in the sixth. Robert Estienne published the editio princeps in Greek in 1547. Copy of the brothers Louis (1571-1659) and Scévole de Sainte-Marthe (1571-1650), historians and scholars, twin sons of the famous poet from Poitou Scévole de Sainte-Marthe (1536-1623), with double manuscript bookplate De Sainte Marthe and Ex Bibl. Fratr. Sam-marthanorum on the title. Copy rebacked, endpapers renewed, discreet restorations to spine.
