Negro morocco, large geometrical decoration of gold fillets and broken listels mosaicked in red morocco, crossed in the centre of the boards by a straight interlace, smooth spine with decoration continuing that of the boards with reserve for the gilt title, brown suede lining and endpapers, gilt on witnesses, cover, half morocco folder, slipcase. The second, slimmer volume, containing the additional suites, is bound in jansenist blackhead morocco, smooth spine with gilt title, brown suede lining and endpapers, gilt on boards; half morocco folder and slipcase identical to those of the first volume (Madeleine Gras). A sumptuous edition produced by the collector Daniel Sickles and René Bas, decorated with 33 original hors-texte burins by André Derain, drawn in 1934 to a design by Ambroise Vollard and printed in 1951 under the artist's direction. Derain's joyously free drawings "are among the artist's finest" (Chapon, Le Peintre et le Livre, p.164). 43 woodcuts engraved by Paul Baudier after Derain's drawings. Edition of 326 copies on Arches vellum. COPY N°4, ONE OF THE 33 FIRST COPIES CONTAINING 2 ORIGINAL DRAWINGS. In the second volume, 2 suites of 36 burins (including 3 unused), one on antique paper and the other on Auvergne; 2 suites of 43 woodcuts printed in black on tinted Malacca, the other in grey on white Malacca; a suite of 8 unused woodcuts drawn by Derain, printed on Malacca. MASTERLY MOSAIC BINDING BY MADELEINE GRAS. Jansenist binding on the second volume, and slipcases also signed.
