In our scene, a monastery is idyllically embedded in a picturesquely wide and green landscape, surrounded by a meandering river. Based on the importance of landscape for the representatives of the Düsseldorf school of painting, we also find a clear focus on landscape as a carrier of mood in Schmitz's work. In his oeuvre, he concentrated mainly on the depiction of monastery and monastic life. - Colour abrasion and flaking along the edges as traces of framing. Firniss somewhat yellowed.
