German painter. (Active 2nd half of the 19th century) King Frederick William I and Field Marshal Leopold I of Anhalt-Dessau (known as "The Old Dessauer") in the Great Northern War before Stralsund Representative, large-format history painting. A scene with many figures during the Pomeranian campaign of 1715/16, in which an allied army consisting of Prussians, Danes and Saxons fought against Swedes and Prussian troops conquered Stralsund and Rügen, is depicted in a finely painted style. The right-hand side of the painting shows the "Soldier King" Frederick William I of Prussia (1688 - 1740), who had reigned since 1713, and next to him the legendary Prussian Field Marshal Prince Leopold I of Anhalt-Dessau (1676 - 1747), who together successfully commanded the Prussian troops. The left side of the picture, on the other hand, is dominated by the historically significant siege and battle scene. The king himself is depicted as commander in a typical pose and uniform in the tradition of Antoine Pesne, with a yellow justeau corps over his cuirass and a blue coat with red lapels, the star of the Order of the Black Eagle on his left breast and a marshal's baton in his right hand. The creator of the present painting, which is artistically outstanding in its convincing characterisation of the two main figures, is probably to be sought in the circle of Adolph von Menzel and Anton von Werner.
