Als Vorlage für diese Komposition diente ein Kupferstich aus der Serie "Virtute Jesu Christi Fillii Dei Vivi" von Johannes und Raphael Sadeler aus dem Jahre 1588. Es handelt sich um eine durchaus zeitnahe und sorgfältig ausgeführte Umsetzung der "Anbetung der Könige" dieser Stichvorlage. Der süddeutsche Maler unseres Bildes, möglicherweise aus München oder Augsburg, hat allerdings auch selbst einige Bildelemente erfunden, etwa die Taube auf dem Gebälk der Scheune, den Baldachin hinter dem Bogenschützen oder die Perlenausschmückung des Gewandes von Balthasar und die Blumen im Vordergrund. This composition is based on a copperplate engraving by Johannes and Raphael Sadeler from the series "Virtute Jesu Christi Fillii Dei Vivi", published in 1588. The work is a successful contemporary rendition of the “Adoration of the Magi“ from this series. The South German author of this work, possibly active in Munich or Augsburg, has added to it several of his own motifs, such as the dove on the roof of the stable, the canopy above the archer, the pearls embroidered onto Bathasar's robes, and the flowers in the foreground.
