DEVERIA (Eugène). Costumes pittoresques de la vallée d'Ossau et des Pyrénées. Pau, Auguste Bassy,s.d. [1844]. In-folio, half green morocco binding, green percaline boards, smooth spine decorated with fillets, gilt title on the first cover (Period binding). Superb album with a frontispiece and 9 plates lithographed and watercoloured at the time, by Eugène Devéria, printed by Lemercier. The first 3 are genre scenes: Souvenir des Eaux-Bonnes, Retour d'une chasse à l'isard, Danse aux Eaux-Bonnes. The last 6 are costume plates, numbered 1 to 6. Eugène Devéria (Paris 1805 - Pau 1865) was a French painter. He rose to fame in 1827 with his monumental painting The Birth of Henry IV, as part of the Romantic movement. He subsequently received several official commissions. He moved to Pau in 1841 for health reasons, where he devoted himself to portraits and picturesque scenes. This rare work has been reprinted in modern times. Rubbing to the binding, corners crushed, but the interior remains fresh, the paper of several plates is uniformly yellowed without detracting from the image. The scene of the dance at Eaux-Bonnes, particularly spectacular, is in very good condition. Labarère 486 - Dendaletche 597.
