In-4°, half vellum binding, light blue boards, smooth spine decorated with title, untrimmed (rubbing to the boards) (Period binding). Private edition of 50 copies of this reprint of the poem by Giorgiana Spencer Cavendish, Duchess of Devonhire, in its translation by Jacques Delille in 1802. Text in French and English. Illustrated with 22 plates: frontispiece, facsimile and 20 lithographed views after drawings by Elizabeth Foster and her sister Henrietta. Some foxing. Giorgiana Spencer (1757-1806) was an English aristocrat, the eldest daughter of John Spencer, 1st Earl Spencer; the latter was the father of George Spencer, 2nd Earl Spencer, from whom Lady Diana Spencer, first wife of the Prince of Wales Charles, who became King of England in 2022, is directly descended. Giorgiana married William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire. She had a troubled love life and wrote an anonymous novel in 1779 (The Sylph) and poems, the most famous of which is Passage of the Mountain St Gothard, published in London in 1799. Lady Elizabeth Foster was Giorgiana's friend, but also her husband's mistress, whom she married after her friend's death. Giorgiana's personality, often compared to Lady Diana, inspired the 2008 film The Duchess. A very rare and beautiful book.
