Paris, Charles-Antoine Jombert, 1760, in-4, marbled calf, spine decorated (period binding). One of the great treatises on the art of French gardens. This reprint of the enlarged fourth edition is illustrated with 49 copper-engraved plates, 40 of which are double-page spreads and 5 fold-outs, based on drawings by the architect J.-B.-A. Le Blond. The work consists of four parts devoted respectively to the theory of beautiful gardens; the construction of parterres, alleys, bosquets, boulingrins, etc.; the cultivation of garden and orangery plants, flowers and shrubs; and finally hydraulics applied to gardens: water management, fountains, reservoirs, ponds, etc. Upper cover missing; lower cover slightly missing.
