Diana, Europe, circa 1750-1760. Folded fan, the leaf in skin, mounted in English style, and painted in gouache with seven paintings. In the centre, two portraits, one of Diana the Huntress holding a spear, the other of an elegant singer with a bouquet of flowers. To the left, a repeat of Nicolas Lancret's "Les oies de frère Philippe" (Brother Philippe's geese), and a couple of peasants conversing. On the border, a reminder of the Roman forum with an obelisk and perhaps the Arch of Titus? On the reverse, garlands of red and blue flowers on either side of cartels of musical instruments and fruit. Original ivory mount (elephantidae spp.) finely cut, carved, engraved and painted with swans, Chinese pottery and eight miniature portraits of women in medallions. Two small carved subjects represent a man and a woman. (Wear, cuts, one broken strand, restorations). Height 26.5 cm; leaf height: 10.9 cm. *An ivory specimen of Elephantidae spp (I/A) pre-Convention, prior to 1 July 1947 and therefore in conformity with EC Regulation 338/97 of 09/12/1996 art.2-Wmc, and prior to 1 July 1975 and therefore in conformity with the French decrees of 4 May 2017 and January 2022.
