The illustration, by George Cruikshank, consists of 24 out-of-text figures, including 3 frontispieces. A first edition copy, with Boz's pseudonym on the three titles and the plate refused by Dickens, known as the "fireside plate" (t. III, p. 311), which constitutes a twenty-fifth figure. It is complete with the rare list of illustrations, the three mastheads and the publisher's advertisements (4 pp. at the end of the first volume and 2 pp. at the beginning of the third).
