Paris, Briasson e.a., 1762-1772. 8 (of 12) volumes in-folio, marbled calf, spine decorated (period binding). First edition and first print run of these eight volumes of plates from the Encyclopaedia, comprising 1886 intaglio plates. The Encyclopédie edited by Diderot and d'Alembert, one of the greatest enterprises of the Western mind in the Age of Enlightenment, was published in 35 folio volumes between 1751 and 1780, including 12 plate atlases (including supplements) containing 2795 plates.
