DIDEROT (Denis) and Jean Le Rond D'ALEMBERT. Encyclopédie, ou dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers. Lausanne, Chez la Société typographique, 1778. 39 volumes in-8, fawn calf, gilt lace, ornate spine, marbled edges (German binding of the period). New Swiss edition, based on that of Jean-Léonard Pellet (Genève, 1777-1779). It is illustrated with two portraits after Cochin and approximately 465 intaglio plates, 48 of which are double-page plates and 75 fold-outs, in the last three volumes. From the Bibliotheca Fideicomm, with stamp with the motto Suscipere et finire repeated on the verso of the titles. The library was founded by Ernest Augustus I, who was King of Hanover from 1837 to 1851. A fine copy in a charming, highly decorative German binding. Restored tear to the title of volume I, one cracked bit to volumes 1, 17, 18 and 21 and 31, restored bit to volume 20 and two volumes of plates.
