Lot no. 116
[DIDEROT (Denis)]. Les Bijoux indiscrets. Tome second. At the Monomotapa, s.d. [Paris, 1748]. In-12, fawn calf, triple gilt fillet, smooth spine grotesquely decorated, inner lace, gilt edges, modern fawn morocco box (period binding). A precious copy with autograph corrections by Diderot in the chapter on the "Bijou voyageur", who wanted to improve the Spanish text by eliminating the Gallicisms that abound (pp. 218-222). Contemporary and later editions of the novel ignore these variants. Attached is an autograph letter from Jean Porcher dated 1946 in which the chief curator of the BnF's Department of Manuscripts attests to the authenticity of these autograph corrections.
The volume appears to have been part of the Fonds Vandeul (Diderot's estate), from which it was taken during the 19th century, according to the attached handwritten note: "Fonds de Vandeul / incomplet; n'est pas au catalogue".
The copy was the subject of a study by François Moureau published in Recherches sur Diderot et sur l'Encyclopédie (1987, no. 3, pp. 172-185) in which the variants it contains are reproduced. It is cited by David Adams in the Bibliographie des œuvres de Denis Diderot (II, 30, §5). It was also included in the Librairie Henner catalogue Provenances célèbres (cat. 25, 1986, no. 21 bis).
This second volume of Les Bijoux indiscrets comes from a reprint of the original edition published under the same fictitious address and probably printed in Paris in the same year. It is decorated with a title vignette and two out-of-text figures. The first volume is missing.
Minor rubbing and scattered light foxing. Angular loss deleting some letters on p. 195; small angular loss without affecting the text on p. 219 and p. 313.
Adams, BI3 (quoted copy).
