Lot no. 21
Diego GIACOMETTI Berceau" table, first version - model created circa 1963 Base in patinated bronze, glass top H. 39.5 - Top: 148 × 44.5 cm Leg alone: 39 × 138 × 48 cm Origin : Mrs A. for her flat in Cannes, circa 1974 Then by descent This work has been authenticated in accordance with the process established by the Diego Giacometti Estate. Historical background: The "Berceau - 1ère version" table is undoubtedly one of Diego Giacometti's most emblematic pieces. According to Daniel Marchesseau¹, only 17 copies of the "Première version" cradle table were made, and it is much rarer than its later versions; it was originally created for Raoul Lévy, the famous film producer. Very simple in appearance, this table is a contemporary of the "Pommeau de canne" armchair, with its pure, architectural lines, where the only decorative motif is a disc that adorns the backrest, an element that is also found as the focal point of the cradle table. In later versions of this table, anthropomorphic legs appeared, the rings opened and animal heads adorned the top. Our model is organised like a painting, with horizontal and oblique lines of force organising and structuring the space and conveying an impression of both strength and fragility, tension and suppleness. This may explain why this model, with its rarity, clean lines and elegance, has found its way into some of the greatest collections (Raoul Lévy, Marguerite and Aimé Maeght, Jacqueline Matisse, Hélène Rochas and Michelle Smith). 1.
