Lot no. 4526
Diploma of the Italienisch Deutchen Feldzug in afrika of Ritterkreuzträger Friedrich Körner. Paper diploma with some tears, attributed to Leutnant Friedrich Körner 2/JG 27, 24 May 1942, autograph signature of Staffelkapitän. Medal complete with ribbon. In antique frame. Size 189.5 x 25.5 cm. This diploma comes from the estate of Ritterkreuzträger Friedrich Körner. Friedrich Körner (24 January 1921 - 3 September 1998) was a Luftwaffe fighter ace during the Second World War. He was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross, a distinction honouring exceptional courage on the battlefield or particularly effective military leadership. In the course of more than 250 missions, Körner was awarded 36 confirmed air victories, all achieved at the controls of a Messerschmitt Bf 109. After completing his pilot and fighter training, he was posted on 4 July 1941 to the I. Gruppe (1st Group) of Jagdgeschwader 27 (JG 27 - 27th Fighter Wing), then engaged in North Africa. By June 1942, he had already scored 20 victories, including five in a single day, 26 June - a performance that made him an "ace in a day", the most prolific day of his career. On 4 July 1942, exactly one year after joining the unit, he was shot down during an attempt to intercept a formation of Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers over the front near El Alamein. Körner was captured and sent to a prison camp in Canada, where he remained until his release in 1947. In January 1956, Friedrich Körner joined the Bundesluftwaffe, the new air force of the Federal Republic of Germany, with the rank of Oberleutnant (lieutenant). He initially worked as a flight instructor, before taking staff training. He retired on 30 June 1979 with the rank of Brigadier General. After his military career, Körner moved to Paris with his wife. He died on 3 September 1998 at the age of 77, in Bailly, in north-central France. Friedrich Körner received several awards during his military career. First of all, he was awarded the Iron Cross, successively 2nd and 1st class. On 10 August 1942, while serving with the rank of lieutenant, he was awarded the Luftwaffe Gold Badge of Honour. A few days later, on 21 August 1942, he was awarded the German Gold Cross as a member of the I. Gruppe of Jagdgeschwader 27. Finally, on 6 September 1942, he was promoted to the rank of Knight of the Iron Cross, as Leutnant and commander of the 2nd squadron of Jagdgeschwader 27. Some wear and patina. Condition II+. Certificate from the Italienisch-Deutschen Feldzug in Afrika belonging to Knight's Cross recipient Friedrich Körner.
