Round top resting on three bamboo shaped double-supports joined by a stretcher. Reverse-trefoil stretcher holds a free standing etagere with a low balcony moulding, on a balustrade support. Adam Weisweiler was born on the 28th October 1746 in Korschenbroich in the Lower Rhine Regions. Not much is known about his early years and apprenticeship, it is often supposed that he learnt in the workshop of Abraham Roentgen, but this cannot be proven. He is first mentioned in Paris in church records in 1777, and then a year later in 1778 he is recorded as being a master craftsman. He founded his workshop in the Rue du Faubourg. Along with Riesner, Molitor, Oeben and Roentgen, Weisweiler belonged to the community of German-speaking ebonists in Paris. Even in his lifetime, his elegant furniture was already being sold for high prices, and his customers were exclusive figures - such as Marie Antoinette, the King of Naples and the Prince of Wales, who later became George VI. Even after the revolution, Weisweiler remained a luxury ebonist, and worked under Queen Hortense. His pieces can today be found in many famous museums, such as the Louvre, the Metropolitan Museum and the Getty Foundation.
