DISC BROOCH - former Kofler-Truniger collection Merovingian/Frankish, 7th century AD. Gold medallion with central embossing. Gold filigree wires in an S-shape and inlaid almandine garnets and gray/black cabochons arranged in a circle. Additional decoration featuring three stylized animal heads (1 missing). The back mounted on bronze and fitted with a fastening eyelet. Stamped decoration. Ø 4.9 cm. Losses to the almandine garnets and gold decoration. Central cabochon missing. Somewhat bent and dented. Bronze slightly tarnished and rubbed on the back. Provenance: - Collection of Ernst and Marthe Kofler-Truniger (1903–1990 & 1918–1999), Lucerne before 1964 (inv. no. K723/I). - Swiss private collection, Lucerne, acquired from the above in ca. 1974. - By inheritance in the same Swiss family collection, Lucerne. Exhibited: Kunsthaus Zurich, Collection E. and M. That example was part of the former Marc Rosenberg Collection (1852–1930) (see auction catalog Hermann Ball & Paul Graupe: Sammlung Marc Rosenberg. Berlin 1929, lot 89 with ill.).
