Lot no. 544
Do Ho Suh Stove, Apartment A, 348 West 22nd Street, New York, NY 10011, USA Polyestergewebe, Edelstahl, Vitrine mit LED Leuchten. 106,2 x 52,1 x 65,3 cm (187,1 x 92 x 88,4 cm). Exemplar 2/3 (+1 A.P.) "What I'm trying to do is memorialize the idea of the home - to carry it with me whenever I go. It sounds like such a cliché, but for me home is ultimately where the heart is." He pauses. "Actually that's a really nice way of putting it. I think it's more accurate to say that I feel like I'm haunted by a space. It's like a ghost, following me around all the time." (Do Ho Suh, Interview mit Christie Lee, Home is Where the Ghost is, in: Baccarat Magazine, Hong Kong December 2013, S.171). Do Ho Suh Stove, Apartment A, 348 West 22nd Street, New York, NY 10011, USA Polyester fabric, stainless steel, display case with LED lighting. 106.2 x 52.1 x 65.3 cm (187.1 x 92 x 88.4 cm). Exemplar 2/3 (+1 A.P.) Accompanied by a signed, dated, and numbered edition certificate. Provenance Lehmann Maupin, New York; Gazelli Art House, London; private collection, England Since his exhibition in Hong Kong in 2013, the Korean artist Do Ho Suh worked consistently to extend his Specimen Series in which he reproduces his personal everyday objects to scale in polyester fabric. The work Stove also pertains to this series, the title carrying the original location of the model, Do Ho Suhs apartment in New York. The presentation in a brightly illuminated glass case shows the delicacy of the work exposing the view of its inner substance. With this series, the artist studies the relationship of his real surroundings and memories which he transfers into a physical form by means of a membrane-like replica of the concrete objects. The personal relationship to these objects and the feeling of home connected to them are also aspects addressed in the work. 'What I'm trying to do is memorialize the idea of the home - to carry it with me whenever I go. It sounds like such a cliché, but for me home is ultimately where the heart is.' He pauses. 'Actually that's a really nice way of putting it. I think it's more accurate to say that I feel like I'm haunted by a space. It's like a ghost, following me around all the time.' (Do Ho Suh, Interview mit Christie Lee, Home is Where the Ghost is, in: Baccarat Magazine, Hongkong December 2013, p.171).
