DODWELL (Edward). Classical and topographical Tour through Greece, during the years 1801, 1805, and 1806. London, Rodwell & Martin, 1819. 2 volumes in-4, green half-maroquin with corners, spine decorated with gilt fillets, untrimmed (English period binding). First edition. It is illustrated with a large fold-out map and 66 plates out of text (including 6 fold-outs and 2 in colour), engraved on metal after Simone Pomardi and other artists. The Irish archaeologist Edward Dodwell (1767-1832) made two trips to Greece: the first in 1801, to the Ionian Islands and the Troad, in the company of William Gell; the second in 1805-1806, when he was taken prisoner of war by the French, who nevertheless allowed him to visit the Peloponnese and revisit the Ionian Islands. From the library of James Hildyard (1809-1887), with armorial bookplate and manuscript dated Christ's College, 1845. Signature on one endpaper: A. Hugues. Minor rubbing to bindings, endpapers probably renewed, map a little foxed and some scattered foxing. The table of engravings and the errata are bound after the preface in the first volume.
