DODWELL (Edward). Views in Greece. London, Rodwell & Martin, 1821. Large folio, fawn calf, double border of gilt friezes set with gilt and blind fillets, richly decorated spine, inner lace, gilt edges (English period binding). First edition and first print run of this magnificent suite of views of Greece in brilliant period colours, chosen from among the finest drawings produced by the Irish archaeologist Edward Dodwell (1767-1832) and the Roman painter Simone Pomardi (1757-1830) during their trip to Greece. This suite, published in six issues from 1819 to 1821, comprises 30 plates engraved in aquatint by R. Havell, T. Fielding, F. C. Lewis, T. Medland and others after E. Dodwell (24) and S. Pomardi (6), finely coloured with brushes, offering "views and scenes with numerous characters who are interesting from the point of view of costume" (Colas). Each is accompanied by a bilingual English-French description on a facing leaf. The title is decorated with a large vignette in the wash style. A copy of the deluxe edition, in which the proofs are mounted on cardboard, with the printed legend pasted on the verso, and provided with protective serpents. From the library of the Earl of Mansfield, with bookplate. Binding restored with minor damage and loss, some light foxing in the text and on the 16th plate, slight transfers of the engravings to the facing text.
