Lot no. 149
DOMENICO BRANDI
(Naples, 1683 - 1736)
Stories of Joseph, c. 1700
Oil on canvas, 152.5X106.5 cm
Provenance:
Rome, private collection
Trained with his father, a skilled perspective painter and decorator, Domenico Brandi looked to the Neapolitan landscape tradition, particularly the works of Gargiulo, before travelling to Rome where he worked in the workshop of Rosa da Tivoli. In the Eternal City, the painter acquired his master's illustrative and bucolic taste, and the painting under examination expresses this mixture very well, arriving at a picturesque vision of nature that would be peculiar to his production. De Dominici defines him as an animalier painter, with results that will also influence the art of Michele Pagano (Naples, 1697 ; 1732) and Nicola Viso (1724 ; 1742).
