Lot no. 2323
Domenico Campagnola (1500-1564), Landscape with Jupiter spotting Callisto asleep, pen and brown ink on paper, with inscription, in pen and brown ink, lower left Tijano , 36.5x49 cm Provenance: Zaccaria Sagredo (1653-1729), his inscription on verso S.T. no. 2 (L.2103a) Part of a group of drawings by Campagnola, all of the same technique and similar dimensions, depicting scenes from the myth of Jupiter and Callisto (T. Nickel, Die Landschaftszeichnungen von Domenico Campagnola, Vienna, 2017, no. 84-88). The Fogg Art Museum at Harvard holds Jupiter Seduces Callisto (inv. 2008.263), the Musée du Louvre, Diana's Hunt (inv. 4787) and Diana's Bath (inv. 4788) and the National Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh, Callisto and her son Arcas (inv. Slight oxidation of the whole with accentuation at the level of the periphery with brownish spots mainly upper edge and right angle. The ink is slightly smudged. The sheet is flat. The left border is no longer straight. There is a trace of a vertical fold crossing the work in the centre. The slightly open fold at the ends has been consolidated by tabs on the reverse. There are small tears in the borders (approx. 1 cm), consolidated by tabs on the reverse: one left border, one right border, one top border. Slight wear to the corners.
