Domenico Tintoretto (attributed to) (1560 - 1635) - Portrait of a gentleman Oil on canvas 56 x 58 cm The painting shows a half-length portrait of a gentleman portrayed three-quarter-length, according to a compositional approach that is fully consistent with Venetian portraiture in the late 16th and early 17th century. The work is most likely attributed to the hand of Domenico Tintoretto, due to the obvious stylistic affinities with his known production. The volumetric construction of the face, solid and calibrated, reveals a careful luministic investigation, while the setting of the effigy - captured in a composed but natural pose - recalls established models in the Venetian figurative culture of the time. Particularly successful is the rendering of the complexion, achieved through soft brushstrokes and skilful gradual tonal transitions that give the face vibrancy and vitality. The beard and hair are defined with quick, confident touches, capable of suggesting texture and movement without indulging in minute detail. The work also demonstrates a remarkable sensitivity in the psychological characterisation of the subject: the gaze, direct and penetrating, establishes an immediate dialogue with the observer, creating an intimate and involving relationship. The painting is presented in a coeval frame.Provenance:Sotheby's auction, New York, 27 March 1987 (as Domenico Tintoretto)
