Jokes, historiettes, balderdash and proverbs that Doni enumerates in a Rabelais-like list: chimere, gosserie, argutie, fanfalucole, sentenze, ghiribizzi... The work is divided into 3 parts: I cicalamenti della zucca del Doni, Le baie and Le chiachiere. The following year Doni completed it with the Frutti. FIRST ISSUE OF THE EXUBERANT ARCHITECTURAL FRAME OF THE TITLE (repeated for the Frutti), specially designed for this work. It is based on a model introduced in Florence in 1550 by the printer Lorenzo Torrentino. Repeated vignette on the titles of the 3 parts (the Truth daughter of Time) and 25 woodcuts, several full-page including 2 portraits and the composition showing Dante, Petrarch and Boccaccio talking, some repeated; several come from the Sorti published by Marcolini in 1540. Title frame, portrait of Petrarch, large frame and vignette for the Frutti. Mortimer, Italian, 164 (does not describe this edition but the Spanish and 2nd Italian editions published later in the same year, with the same illustration). A fine copy, very elegantly bound in 18th century fawn calf (corners bumped; small loss at corners of upper head).
