Large in-8, midnight blue morocco, triple gilt fillet, ornate spine, red morocco lining decorated with rich gilt small-iron lace, double comb endpapers, gilt head, untrimmed (Émile Rousselle). First edition of this 18th century masterpiece, illustrated by Charles Eisen with a frontispiece, an engraved out-of-text figure, a title finial, 22 vignettes and 22 culs-de-lampe engraved after his drawings, except for two culs-de-lampe by Marillier. The Imitation des auteurs latins, published later, has not been included. A very fine copy in a fine double binding. From the Belsfied library, with bookplate. Upper hinge restored, one endpaper cut but not missing. Cohen, 308 - Ray, 31.
