The third, expanded and updated edition, the best and most beautiful of this important collection of documents on the militias and municipal offices of the échevinage and consular jurisdiction of Paris. The first edition of this work, by François Drouart, was published in 1658 and reprinted in 1667. It was revised and enlarged up to 1770 in the present edition, which we owe to Augustin-Eugène Hay, colonel of the capital's guards, who dedicated it to Abbé Bignon. The illustration consists of two portraits of Bignon and Hay, engraved by Levesque after Lambert, and 43 etched plates of military uniforms illustrating the Instruction ou École du soldat (these are numbered from 1 to 44, plate no. 3 never having been engraved). One of the rare copies on large paper with the uniform plates coloured at the time. A superb copy in red morocco with lace bearing the arms of Jean-Baptiste Vacquette or Vaquette de Gribeauval (1715-1789), inspector and reformer of artillery, Lieutenant-General of the King's Armies in 1765, Commander of the Order of Saint-Louis in 1764 and Grand Cross on 10 October 1776. The gilder used several irons to create the heraldic decoration and took from Dubuisson's Armorial of 1757 (p. 118) the Vacquette de Cardonnoy arms, Or, three cinquefoils Gules, on a chief Azure three mullets Or. This family is one of the branches to which Gribeauval belongs. Ex-libris IFC. Light stains on the last leaf of the text and the first plate.
