A former student of Saint-Cyr, he was a pioneer of mountaineering and military skiing in the Alpine hunters. He commanded a company and then a battalion of chasseurs during the First World War. He was appointed general in 1933. During the Second World War, he commanded the 6th Army. He retired from the military after the armistice of 1940. He was elected to the Académie Delphinale in 1941.
