Lot no. 72
DRUMONT (Edouard). An autograph manuscript of 3 pages and a half with many corrections in his hand. Undated, circa 1911. Interesting document intended for printing: the manuscript has been cut into several parts assembled on a new paper support, while the typographer has added technical marks in red pencil. The leaves are held together by a pin. In this text, Édouard Drumont (1844-1917) reads the Origines de la France contemporaine by Hippolyte Taine (1828-1893), and more particularly the Jacobin conquest, analysing the French Revolution as a consequence of the excessive centralisation of the Ancien Régime and the resignation of the elites in the face of the vile rabble. When Robespierre shed his blood, Drumont wondered at the heart of this manuscript: "What amazes me, I repeat, is that on French soil, the elite of the bourgeoisie accepted the idea that these cannibalistic spectacles would indicate an era of fraternity and progress. Taine freed our brains from these dishonourable aberrations; he freed us from the tribute of admiration we pay to the crocodile (...)". Taine's critical vision of the Revolution influenced reactionary thinkers, and Drumont explicitly claimed Taine as his model when he declared that he wanted to write his own version of a "conquest", that of the Jews over France. Although we have not been able to find this exact article in its published version, a very similar one was published in 1911 in the review "La France antimaçonnique", an organ of the Conseil antimaçonnique de France.
