DRYDEN (John). The Fables. London, J. Edwards & E. Harding, 1797. Large in-4, red morocco, wide border of gilt roulettes, fleurons and fillets, ornate spine, interior framing, gilt and chased edges (Period binding). A sumptuous edition decorated with 24 compositions by Diana Beauclerk, including 9 hors-texte and 15 vignettes and culs-de-lampe, finely engraved by Francesco Bartolozzi. A watercolourist and draughtswoman, Lady Diana Beauclerk (1734-1808) was the daughter of the Duke of Marlborough. A superb copy in decorated contemporary morocco in which all the engravings have been delicately coloured. One spine cracked, headpieces and corners worn, some scattered spotting.
