RARE AND IMPORTANT FIRST COLLECTIVE EDITION OF THE MAIN FRENCH TREATIES ON HUNTING, published by L'Angelier and Le Mangnier - here in the latter's name. It brings together for the first time all the texts relating to hunting which, from this date, will form the corpus published under Du Fouilloux's name. La Vénerie, written for François II (it is he, not Charles IX, who is depicted in the fine frontispiece of the author offering his book according to Mortimer), was first published in Poitiers by Marnef in 1561, with a dedication to Charles IX, who had become king in the meantime; it was then published in Paris by Galliot II du Pré in 1573. La Vénerie is expanded with various hunting texts under the heading Additions: La Chasse du loup de Clamorgan, La Chasse au conil, and Plusieurs remedes... pour la maladie des Chiens. The Recueil des mots, dictions et manieres de parler en l'art de Venerie in book Kk is included in the copy. The second part, with its own title page, is devoted exclusively to the art of hunting in flight and is addressed "to all lovers of the pastime and virtuous exercise of Falconry". Fauconnerie by Jean de Franchières, written around 1484 for Jacques du Fou, grand veneur to Louis XI, was published in Paris around 1511, then in 1567 by Marnef in Poitiers, and is followed by treatises by Guillaume Tardif and Arthelouche de Alagona. EDITION ILLUSTRÉE DE 88 BOIS GRAVÉS, which remains "highly sought after because of the advantage of the increases it contains, and because the print run of the engravings is better than that of later editions" (Thiebaud). La Venerie is illustrated with 57 figures - including the three remarkable woodcuts of the "black" animals of the dog and wild boar, some of which are full-page (the presentation of the book to the king, hunting banquets). La Fauconnerie is illustrated with 31 figures of birds, some taken directly from Belon's Histoire de la nature des oyseaux. Unpublished vignette engraved on the titles: a veneur and a falconer practising in the countryside. Notated music, notably in the charming plates of the shepherdesses. VERY PRETTY EXEMPLAIRE IN TIME-BASED VELIN, with a 17th century inscription: EX-LIBRIS MANUSCRIT "DE MONTMOREAU" on the lower flyleaf, in a large 17th century handwriting. It probably refers to a member of the Du Bois de Montmoreau family, whose beautiful château (half-Gothic, half-Renaissance) is located in the Charente region.
