DUBUFFET (Jean) LeR DLa CaNpaNe parR DUBUFe J. In-12 (18.7 x 13.6 cm), stapled, illustrated cover. First edition with 6 engravings by Jean Dubuffet on linoleum, wood and camembert boxes. The text, in phonetics, is calligraphed in point on stencil. LeR DLa CaNpaNe is Dubuffet's first work in jargon. Characteristic of Art Brut, it was produced rudimentarily and entirely by the artist's hand. The creative process is described in detail in his 1962 book Vignettes lorgnettes: "[LeR DLa CaNpaNe] was drawn up by me with the help of my wife, page after page, on the dining-room table that was quickly cleared away after meals [...], with no machine other than the flat of the hand for the engravings and, for the text pages, a rudimentary stencil [...] on which I wrote with a point. The result, as you might expect, was a rather barbaric impression, made worse by the use of thin paper that let the reverse side show through and thus somewhat blurred the thin characters of the text". Limited edition of 165 copies on newsprint, one of the 15 copies of the deluxe edition stained in the margins with a black ink roller, accompanied by 4 additional engravings. Sent by Dubuffet to the writer Henri Michaux: "Exemplaire pour Henri Michaux J. Dubuffet". The two men met in 1945, at an exhibition of Dubuffet's first lithographs at the Galerie André. It was the beginning of a friendship based on mutual admiration and an artistic approach that challenged traditional culture. The mailing replaces the justification, "egzanpler pour", which was not printed here. A rare copy of the first edition with 5 additional engravings and a letter to the writer Henri Michaux. Very slight damage to the edges of the leaves, notably on the cover, some tinting of the cover at the staples, very small printing loss on the last leaf. Provenance: Henri Michaux (consignment).
