Lot no. 85
DUFOUR (Guillaume Henri). Topographische Karte der Schweiz. S.l., s.n., 1855. Broadside, bound in half Russian leather with corners, gilt title on spine, large title-piece on first board (spine restored, hinges reinforced, maps mounted on tabs) (Period binding). A fine copy of this legendary 1:100,000 map of Switzerland in 25 sheets, engraved in intaglio between 1845 and 1864. Sheet size: 77 x 56.5 cm. The first sheet forms the title, followed by 24 double-page map sheets. Sheets III, IV, X, XII, XIII, XIV, XV, XVIII, XXI, XXII, XXIV and XXV are first editions, while the other sheets already contain supplements. This colossal work, directed by General Guillaume Henri Dufour, took more than 30 years to complete, between 1833 and 1864. The first two sheets (Geneva and Valais), printed on copper and featuring an original relief representation, appeared in 1844-45. They were at the origin of the worldwide reputation of Swiss cartography, which was confirmed at the 1867 World Exhibition in Paris, where the entire map could be admired. See La topographie de la Suisse, 1832-1864: histoire de la carte Dufour, Bern, 1898.
