Lot no. 71
DUMAS fils, Alexandre. La Vie à vingt ans. Paris, Hippolyte Souverain, 1850; 2 volumes in 1 vol. in-8 of 258 pp; [4]-308 pp, contemporary binding in half blond basane, smooth spine decorated with gilt faux-nerfs and fleurons. A very rare first edition. This novel of youth, published shortly after La Dame aux Camélias and describing the disillusions of the passage to adulthood, did not meet with the expected success.
Autograph signed letter from the author "to my friend Raux (?)", possibly the painter Louis Raux.
F From the library of Digby Sheffield Neave (1928-2015) with his armorial bookplate. A Dumas father and son specialist, he lived in Dumas' house in Marly-le-Roi and was behind the rescue of the Château de Monte-Cristo and the formation of the Société des Amis d'Alexandre Dumas. He had built up a unique library in which no first edition was missing.
Vicaire III, 457.
