Lot no. 69
DUMAS père, Alexandre. Une Mère. Autograph manuscript signed. Paris, 19 August 1857; 7 large folio-sized plates (44 x 28 cm) on blue laid paper, folded, bound in one oblong in-4 vol. (23 x 30 cm), contemporary binding in ebony chagrin, title and date gilt on the first cover, cold fillet, penholder inserted in a gutter on the second cover. Complete autograph manuscript on blue paper of the short story Une Mère which was printed in 1861 in the collection Bric-à-Brac, under the title Une Mère. Tale imitated from Andersen: how a mother, ready to do anything to save her child from the hand of Death, finally gives up trying to save him. At the bottom of the last leaf, an ex-dono from Alexandre Dumas specifies that the penholder used to write the story is enclosed with the book. It is still in place in a leather gutter, with its handle decorated in tartan: "Offered to Monsieur Castel with the pen that wrote it. A. Dumas 19 August 1857". Beautiful and moving document, with the penholder of Alexandre Dumas preserved. Some repairs to the paper.
