Lot no. 86
DUNANT (David). Tourists in Chamonix in 1853. Genève, Imprimerie Ch. Gruaz, 1853. In-8°, paperback. Rare first edition. A travel guide to Chamonix, from Geneva and back via Martigny and the Rhône valley. The author does not hesitate to criticise the guides published before his own: "The itineraries [...] the traveller is soon struck by their inaccuracy, their inadequacy and the futility of their fine phrases. [...] As for the general itineraries [...] they are not without errors or indications that are currently inaccurate [...] Ebel has become an eagle mauled by vultures". Bourrit? "the picturesque musings of the cantor of the Alps are written in pithy French". The author does, however, borrow extensively from these disparaged authors. La fête des vignerons et les rives du Léman en 1851.
