DURANTY (Louis Edmond) Paris,, E. Dentu,, 1876... The New Painting. About the group of artists exhibiting in the Durand-Ruel galleries. In-8 (24 x 15,7 cm), bradel red half-chagrin, author-title-year gilt on spine. First edition of one of the first studies devoted to the Impressionist movement. Edmond Duranty, a writer for the realist movement who had become an art critic, published this booklet on the occasion of the second Impressionist exhibition, held on 1 April 1876. Instead of providing a factual account of the exhibition and presenting each of the artists, Duranty took the opportunity to attack the Salon and academicism. He did, however, hail the "new painting" represented for him above all by his friend Edgar Degas, the author of his famous portrait. Edition of 750 copies. This copy is enriched with two sheets of handwritten notes by the doctor and art historian Élie Faure. It also includes a few notes by Faure written in pencil at the bottom of the pages. Superficial scratches on the boards, leaves slightly browned, slight soiling and foxing, restoration to the last leaf. Provenance : Élie Faure (handwritten notes).
