DÜRER (Albrecht). The Four Books of the Proportion of the Parts and Perimeters of the Human Body. Arnhem, Jean Jansz, 1614. Small folio, fawn calf, spine decorated, red edges (18th century binding). Second edition in French of this famous treatise on aesthetics for painters and engravers, illustrated with numerous woodcuts by Albrecht Dürer. This collection of theoretical writings on the proportions of the human body was not published in German until after his death in 1528, before being translated into Latin and other languages. The French translation, by Louis Meigret, dates from 1557. The present reprint from Arnhem is also dated 1613. From the library of Pierre-Claude Pecquot de Saint-Maurice (1687-1759), president of the Chambre des comptes de Paris, with bookplate. Spine rebound in imitation, small lack affecting a few letters on f. 36, last line trimmed on f. 124 r°, brown stain at the corner of a few leaves, discreet foxing and dampening.
