East German Art Ernst Hassebrauk n.d. (double portrait). Circa 1960. Mixed media with oil and chalk over pencil on wove paper. 73.5 x 100 cm. Signed. - Some studio traces verso. Overall very good. Extremely expressive composition executed in impulsive strokes, partly in charming pastose application of colour. Hassebrauk studied at the Staatliche Akademie für Kunstgewerbe and at the Technische Hochschule in his home town of Dresden from 1925. He then attended the Academy of Graphic Arts and Book Crafts in Leipzig, where he was a master student of Willi Geiger. In 1947, he became a professor at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig, where he trained Werner Tübke, among others. From 1953, Hassebrauk exhibited regularly in the GDR and West Germany. His extensive oeuvre is influenced by both impressionist and expressionist movements and by his engagement with the Nordic masters of the Golden Age.
