With the human figure at the centre, he develops symbolically charged pictorial spaces. In 1989 and 1990, Morgner created a series of works entitled "9.11.1989". These were created as a direct reaction to the fall of the Berlin Wall. Composed in deep black ink, powerfully placed on the picture surface with traces of work and drips, Morgner creates an energetic, seemingly spherical frame for the figure, which is interrupted by the figure of the "Burning Man". This visualises a metaphorical meaning in the sense of the departure - both of the Wall and of the political and social division of Germany - which at the same time testifies to the intensity of the artistic research into the motif. Ink, wash and monotype with asphalt varnish on wove paper. Monogrammed and dated '9.11.1989' and additionally signed and dated on verso. - With studio marks on verso. Overall in very well preserved condition. Powerful composition. - The present work will be included in volume 2 of the catalogue raisonné of works on paper and small-format works, edited by Dr Thomas Weckerle, which is currently in preparation. - Monotype using the printing plate from 'Brennender Mann II' (Werner/Juppe 6/88) from 1988. 1500
