His tuition with Hermann Glöckner proved decisive for his artistic development; it was under Glöckner’s influence that the ‘Constructive Exercises’ were created. In these works, he increasingly explores the geometric division of the picture plane. The compositions begin with a simple central line intersected by a diagonal, and develop into complex structures comprising several lines that divide the sheet in varying proportions.
