Kept by the descendants of the renowned Greek sculptor Panayotis Vassilakis, "Takis", this watch was his companion throughout his life as an artist from the early 1980s until his death in 2014, and was entrusted to PIASA by his descendants.
Takis was famous for creating kinetic sculptures that often combined elements of technology, magnetism and light, and must have been inspired by the design of this watch, which remains a best-seller from the early 1980s for the Ebel brand, under its leader Pierre-Alain Blum.
A legendary figure in the revival of mechanical watchmaking in the early 1980s, the director of the Ebel brand had at the time equipped his watch with Zenith's famous El Primero 400 calibre, whose reliability is legendary, developing a frequency of 36,000 beats per hour.
Takis' art has challenged traditional sculpture by making it dynamic, interactive and sometimes even unpredictable. His notable works include sculptures that use magnetic forces to suspend metal objects or set them in motion.
A key figure in the post-war European avant-garde movement, he has been the subject of numerous exhibitions and retrospectives around the world, including at the Tate Modern in London and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
