Presumed martyrs of saint Abdon and saint Sennen, oil and gold on panel, Aragonese School, circle of Tomás GINER ca. 1460
26.57 x 21.65 in.
67.5 x 55.0 cm
Following a pattern common in fifteenth-century Spain, our panel belonged to a more complex altarpiece, in which several compartments were to complete a central scene. Ours depicts Christian martyrs who refused to worship pagan idols, placed on columns in the background. The figure standing on the left, holding a sceptre, is still a medieval representation of the Roman emperor. Despite the presence of a single halo, we can suggest that the martyrs are Abdon and Sennen and their acolytes, who are highly venerated in Spain, rather than Saint Cosmas and Saint Damian. This is the case even though their iconography is sometimes intertwined, as in the Altarpiece of Saints Abdon and Sennen by Jaime Huguet, Terrassa church in Barcelona (1460), where the predella shows the assassination of Saints Cosmas and Damian. There is a slight influence from Jaime Huguet on our painting, an artist who provided a link between Barcelona and Aragon.
