BRUGES SCHOOL, circa 1500, Surrounded by Jan Provost (C. 1465 - 1529) Golgotha Oak panel with parquet floor 84.5 x 54.5 cm (Minor dents) This high quality panel belongs to the last lights of the Bruges school at the end of the 10th century. We can see the influence of the great Flemish Gothic tradition, particularly in the group of the Virgin, Saint John and the Holy Women, which goes back to Rogier van der Weyden [1], but also the inflection given in this city by the early works of Gérard David [2] before 1500, and those of Hans Memling [3]. Their influence can be seen in the faces of the figures on the right in the background, and in those of the two thieves, which show a real talent for portraiture on the part of our painter. The armour of the three soldiers on the right shows the still timid introduction of the Italian Renaissance, with its spiral decoration in the style of Antiquity on the armour, or the gilded epaulette, all "extravagant" details at the turn of the 1500s and adopted at the same time by Antwerp artists such as Jan de Beer, the master of the Antwerp Adoration, the Master of 1518 and the "Antwerp Mannerists". Our panel is similar to the large-format Crucifixion by Jan Provost, circa 1505 (117 x 172.5 cm; Bruges, Groeningemusuem, inv. GRO1661.I). The inscriptions embroidered on the horseman's cloak are difficult to interpret, as some of them are hidden by the pointed weapon of the soldier in front of him and the folds of the green cloth. On the collar, it reads Romano, possibly for "senatus romano". At the bottom, it reads "... RCVI 7", perhaps REAL or a number, then "AEDREOM", followed by a monogram "ATC ...AN ... [4](a hidden letter, a C: ?)MEROD...". [1] For example, his paintings in the Prado Museum in Madrid and the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
